It was just a coincidence really. Cindy and I were listening to some old music when Everything I Own, by David Gates and Bread came on. I guessed the year it was released and then went to Wikipedia to see if I was correct. I wasn't. I thought it was released in 1970 and it was actually '72.
But while checking the dates this Father's Day Weekend, I learned more about the song's origin. Although initial listeners may have interpreted it as a song about a broken relationship, Gates would later reveal that it was a song about the passing of his father.
The lyrics tell quite a story. It's a story I could have written about the relationship I had with my own dad. I'll bet a lot of men would say the same thing. Our dad's are so important to how our lives unfold. I only hope that I've been for my children what my dad was for me.
Kept me warm, kept me warm
You gave my life to me
Set me free, set me free
The finest years I ever knew
Were all the years I had with you
And I would give anything I own
And I would give anything I own
Give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own
Just to have you back again
You taught me how to love
You taught me how to love
What it's of, what it's of
You never said to much
But still you showed me the way
And I knew from watching you
Nobody else could ever know
The part of me that can't let go
And I would give anything I own
Give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own
Just to have you back again
Is there someone that you know
You're owing them so
But taking them all for granted
You may lose them one day
Someone takes them away
And they don't hear the words you long to say
I would give anything I own
Give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own
Just to have you back again
Just to touch you once again
Happy Father's Day Dad.
I would give everything I own just to have you back again!
